What is Health and Wellness Coaching?
Health and Wellness Coaching is a collaborative, client-centered, partnership between the client and the coach, focused on setting and reaching goals towards the client’s optimal health.

What is a Health and Wellness Coach?
A Health Coach is a certified, trained professional who collaborates with the client to support their health and wellness goals. Through a trusting relationship, your health coach becomes your partner, health guide and supporter in your goals.
What is a Certified Health Coach…
Health and Wellness Coaching began gaining momentum in the 90’s, mostly in workplace wellness programs, to promote wellbeing amongst employees. Beginning in the early 2000’s, the industry began to grow to what is now a certifiable career path, employable in many arenas such as employee health programs, health insurance companies, healthcare provider offices, solo practitioners and contracted roles. In 2021, the National Board of Certified Health and Wellness Coaches was developed to provide the highest standard of care. Previously, this profession was not regulated by any governing board. National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coaches are certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, the same board that certifies Medical Doctors, who must maintain continuing education to retain their certification.
What does Coaching look like?
A health coaching client can self refer or be referred by their medical provider to work towards their health goals. The relationship between the client and the coach is one of trust, collaboration and accountability. The Coach’s role is that of guide and supporter, with the client directing the goals to be set and hopefully met. The ultimate goal in Health and Wellness Coaching is for improvement for the client in their desired outcomes.
What Topics are covered?
No topic is off limits when it comes to your health and wellness. Topics covered can include physical activity, nutrition, weight management, stress management, smoking or vaping cessation, sleep, chronic disease improvement, or any condition you wish to improve. Oftentimes, two or more areas of wellness can affect another, creating more than one topic to improve upon.
What can I expect from a Health and Wellness Coaching Session?
All programs and sessions begin with building trust, discussion and refining the client’s goals and desires related to their health and wellness. Once the basics are established, the coach will guide the client to deeper understand their desires behind their goals, then work to identify what works and what doesn’t work in the client’s situation. The client will then work towards setting goals that are achievable for them. Through regular check in’s and communication, the coach and client will continue to hone the goals and
reflect on the work in between sessions.
What are the Benefits of Health Coaching?
Through the collaborative partnership with the coach, the client will begin to recognize their beliefs and discover their strengths, to which both can be leveraged to make changes in their life. Working together, the client can create goals that work for them based on their understanding of themselves.
What Health and Wellness Coaching is NOT:
Health and Wellness Coaching is not medical advice or therapy in which clients will be prescribed or diagnosed. The Health Coach works alongside the healthcare providers.
